Event Description

Kelsey Michael launches album Lethowsow, due for release on Dimple Discs 1st July. It’s a collection which celebrates the art of song whilst transporting us to the magical wild West Cornwall landscape, Kelsey’s home, anchor and inspiration. The sonic vision for her music laces Kelsey’s love for 60s and 70s classic singer-song writing – artists such as Laura Nyro and Carole King – with a contemporary art-pop edge. This mix has already caught the ear of Gilles Peterson who played second Lethowsow single Mounts Bay Morning on his BBC 6 music and Worldwide FM shows this spring. Rob Hughes described Kelsey’s music as ‘nyro-esque rapture’ in his June 2024 article for Uncut on the emerging Cornish folk scene, “The suitably immersive Lethowsow deals in the elemental forces that shape coastal existence, both physically and psychologically.”

The sea is a major character in Kelsey’s music; Lethowsow (Laith-oh-so), means ‘the milky ones’ in old Cornish. It was used as a name for the treacherous Seven Stones reef on the way to Lands End, a stretch of rocks like sharks teeth always frothing with white water. For Kelsey Lethowsow represents the awesome and humbling power of nature. Storytelling, folky drones, uplifting piano songs and dreamy cinematic song-landscapes will all play a part as the evening unfolds. A singer with a dynamic wide-reaching vocal range, Kelsey can take her listeners to rare and exhilarating places, creating a world of texture within a song. Greg Dyer plays drums and Matt Tweed bass, Eleanor Mumford will guest on vocals and Alice Wonder Harp will join the band on some songs.

Alice’s magical solo set will open the night with a mesmerising collection of her own nature inspired compositions, plus harp pieces in an exciting variety of styles taking the audience around the world. Based on The Lizard, Alice also performs in Cornwall with her duo Sea Strings and folk/ceilidh band ‘The Murmurations’.

You’ll find Kelsey on many a High Llamas album including ‘Can Cladders’, and on Jocelyn Pook’s soundtrack for Stanley Kubrick’s ‘Eyes Wide Shut.’ For more information, visit: kelseymichael.com
